This week’s headline track is violinist Anne Akiko Meyers’ premiere recording of New Chaconne, a work written specially for her by Philip Glass. It appears in her new album devoted to works by the iconic American composer. As Meyers tells Apple Music Classical, Glass’ new work “captures the spirit of joyful beginnings, unfolding like the telling of a beautiful story”. New Chaconne, as the title suggests, is based on a stately ground (repeated) bass, and has the serene beauty of a slow movement by Handel. Though scored for violin and piano, Meyers decided to partner instead with harpist Emmanuel Ceysson. “I felt that Emmanuel would bring a uniquely rich dimension of colour and texture to the piece,” says Meyers. “I’ve worked and recorded with him for many years—he’s an extraordinary harpist, musician, and spirit.
